How Google Ads works, when PPC makes sense for local businesses, how to target Tunbridge Wells properly and the common mistakes that waste budget.

"Is Google Ads worth it?" It's one of the most common questions I hear from business owners in Tunbridge Wells, usually from someone who's tried it before, spent more than they expected and isn't sure what they got for their money.

The honest answer is that Google Ads can be one of the most effective ways for a local business to generate enquiries. It can also waste money very quickly if it isn't set up and managed carefully. The difference usually comes down to strategy, targeting and tracking.

In this guide, I'll explain how PPC works, when it makes sense for local businesses and the common mistakes to avoid.

What is PPC advertising?

PPC stands for pay-per-click. It's a type of online advertising where you pay each time someone clicks your ad, rather than paying for the ad to be shown.

The best-known PPC platform is Google Ads, which shows your adverts on Google search results, Google Maps, YouTube and partner websites. Other platforms, such as Microsoft Advertising, Facebook and Instagram, also offer paid advertising, although social ads work quite differently (more on that below).

When people talk about PPC for local businesses, they usually mean Google Search Ads, the text adverts at the top of Google's results, marked "Sponsored".

How Google Search Ads work

Here's a simplified version of what happens behind the scenes:

  1. You choose the keywords you want your ads to appear for, for example "emergency electrician Tunbridge Wells".
  2. You write ads and choose where people land on your website when they click.
  3. You set a daily budget and tell Google how you'd like to bid.
  4. When someone searches, Google runs an auction among advertisers targeting that search.
  5. Google decides which ads appear, and in what order, based on your bid and the quality and relevance of your ad and landing page.

That last point is important. You can't simply outspend everyone. A relevant ad pointing to a helpful landing page can often appear above a competitor who's bidding more.

Why PPC can work for local businesses

PPC has some real advantages, particularly for small and local businesses:

  • Speed. Campaigns can start generating traffic as soon as they go live, unlike SEO, which takes time to build.
  • Control. You decide your budget, the searches you appear for, the areas you target and when your ads run.
  • Measurability. With proper tracking, you can see exactly which keywords and ads generate calls, enquiries and sales.
  • Flexibility. You can pause, adjust or scale campaigns depending on demand, capacity or seasonality.

For a business with good margins and a clear service, that combination can be very powerful.

Reaching customers with high purchase intent

The real strength of Google Search Ads is intent. Someone searching "boiler repair Tunbridge Wells today" isn't idly browsing. They need help, probably now.

Compare that with someone scrolling Instagram, who may be interested in your product but wasn't actively looking for it. Both can work, but they need different approaches.

Good PPC focuses budget on searches that show clear buying intent, and excludes searches that don't. For example, an accountant probably wants "accountant for small business Tunbridge Wells", but not "accountancy jobs Kent" or "free accounting software". Those irrelevant searches are added as negative keywords, so you don't pay for clicks that will never become customers.

Geographic targeting around Tunbridge Wells

Location targeting is one of the most useful features for local businesses, and one of the most commonly misconfigured.

You can target:

  • A radius around your premises, for example 10 miles around Tunbridge Wells.
  • Specific towns and areas, such as Tunbridge Wells, Southborough, Pembury, Tonbridge and Crowborough.
  • Wider areas such as Kent or East Sussex, if you travel further or deliver nationally.

One setting catches many people out. By default, Google can show ads to people who are "interested in" your location, not just people who are physically there. For a local service business, that can mean paying for clicks from people miles away. Checking that setting is one of the first things I do when reviewing an account.

Managing advertising budgets

There's no single right budget for Google Ads. It depends on how competitive your industry is, how much each click costs, how many enquiries you need and what a new customer is worth to you.

A useful way to think about it:

  • Estimate what a new customer is worth to your business.
  • Work out how much you could comfortably spend to win one.
  • Start with a budget that lets you gather meaningful data, then adjust based on results.

It's also worth being clear on the two costs involved. Your advertising spend is paid directly to Google. If you work with a consultant or agency, their management fee is separate. At Digital AdDoctor, Google Ads management starts from £450 per month, and advertising spend is always paid separately, directly to Google. Tracking leads, bookings and sales

If you can't see which clicks become customers, you can't tell whether Google Ads is worth it. Tracking is the foundation of every successful campaign.

As a minimum, you should be tracking:

  • Contact form submissions.
  • Phone calls from ads and from your website.
  • Online bookings or purchases.
  • Important actions such as quote requests or email clicks.

With conversion tracking in place, Google can also optimise your bids towards the searches most likely to convert. Without it, you're relying on guesswork. Our analytics, tracking and CRO service covers Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager and conversion tracking set-up.

Common reasons Google Ads campaigns waste money

When I audit underperforming accounts, I tend to see the same issues again and again:

  • Broad keyword matching without negative keywords, so ads appear for irrelevant searches.
  • Incorrect location settings, showing ads to people outside the area you serve.
  • No conversion tracking, or tracking that counts the wrong things.
  • Sending all traffic to the homepage instead of a relevant, focused landing page.
  • Generic ad copy that doesn't give people a reason to choose you.
  • Relying entirely on automated recommendations without checking whether they suit your business.
  • Set and forget. Campaigns need regular reviewing and refining.

If any of these sound familiar, a Google Ads audit is a sensible first step. It shows where budget is being wasted and what to change.

SEO vs PPC

This isn't really an either/or decision. SEO and PPC do different jobs, and they often work best together.

A common approach is to use PPC to generate enquiries now, while SEO builds your organic visibility over time. PPC data can even show you which keywords convert best, which helps guide your SEO. You can read more in SEO Tunbridge Wells: how to get your business found on Google.
