You've built a website, launched your landing page and perhaps even invested in some digital marketing.
But there's one problem.
When you search for your business on Google, you're nowhere to be found.
Sound familiar?
You're certainly not alone. It's one of the most common frustrations I hear from business owners in Tunbridge Wells and across Kent.
The good news? There are several reasons your business might not be appearing in Google Search, and many of them can be addressed.
1. Google hasn't indexed your website
Before your website can appear in search results, Google needs to discover and index its pages.
If your website is relatively new, Google might not have processed it yet.
You can check by typing site:yourwebsite.co.uk into Google.
If no pages appear, check whether your site is indexed using Google Search Console.
My tip: Submit an XML sitemap through Google Search Console and check for indexing errors.
2. Your website isn't targeting the right keywords
Imagine you're a personal trainer based in Tunbridge Wells.
Your website talks about your passion for fitness, your experience and your services. But nowhere does it mention "Personal Trainer Tunbridge Wells".
How is Google supposed to understand which local searches your website is relevant for?
Think about what your customers actually type into Google.
For example:
- Personal trainer in Tunbridge Wells
- Personal training near me
- Weight loss coach in Tunbridge Wells
- One-to-one personal training Tunbridge Wells
Your website should naturally answer these searches through its page titles, headings and content.
3. Your Google Business Profile needs attention
If you run a local business, your Google Business Profile is particularly important.
It's what helps your business appear on Google Maps and in local search results.
Check that you've:
- Claimed and verified your profile.
- Selected the most relevant business category.
- Added your correct contact details and opening hours.
- Described your services.
- Uploaded genuine photos.
- Encouraged customers to leave reviews.
A well-maintained profile doesn't guarantee a top ranking, but it gives Google useful information about your business.
4. Your competitors have stronger SEO
Sometimes your website is indexed and optimised, but competitors are simply doing a better job. #sorrynotsorry
They might have better service pages, more relevant content, stronger backlinks or a more established online presence.
This is why competitor research matters.
At Digital AdDoctor, I look at what competitors are ranking for, which pages attract relevant traffic and where opportunities exist to improve your visibility.
5. Your website has technical problems
Even a beautiful website can struggle in Google Search if it has technical issues.
Some common problems include:
- Important pages accidentally marked as noindex.
- Broken internal links.
- Slow loading times.
- Poor mobile usability.
- Duplicate content.
- Incorrect redirects.
A technical SEO audit helps identify which issues are affecting your website.
6. You're not creating useful content
Google needs to understand that your website provides relevant, helpful information.
And your customers need answers.
For example, a beauty clinic could publish articles answering:
"How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?"
"Is laser hair removal painful?"
"How much does laser hair removal cost?"
These articles can attract people researching treatments and introduce them to the business before they're ready to book.
The same principle applies to virtually every industry.
7. Your local SEO isn't strong enough
If your customers are based in Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks or Tonbridge, your website should make your service areas clear.
This doesn't mean repeating your town name 50 times.
It means creating genuinely useful service pages that explain what you offer, where you operate, where they should park and why customers should choose you e.g. great coffee shops near by?
How long does it take to appear on Google?
It depends.
New pages can be discovered relatively quickly, but competitive rankings often take several months to improve.
SEO isn't an overnight solution. It's about building relevant, technically sound and useful content that earns visibility over time.
